Construction has one of the highest accident and death rates of any one occupation in the Ontario area. Between 2005 and 2009, there were 117 deaths and 998 serious injuries in the field. That is over 1000 people whose life was changed forever and over 1000 families who were affected by the tragedies. With such a high rate of experiences, the Labour Force has decided to change how it inspects safety conditions.
Ontario’s new construction site safety plan has changed and will continue to change, in order to protect employee from further deaths and injuries. Full time inspectors have been increased to 430 in number so each construction company is visited and inspected more often. There will be a high concentration of inspections to companies listed as high risk or with a record of trying to circumvent the law.
A new toll free number will be set up so as to encourage employees and citizens to report safety violations at construction sites. Anyone is allowed to report without fear of losing their current employment or reprisal. Reports remain confidential and help to control violations, so all employees can be protected.
Safety issues such as ladders used incorrectly, beam construction, faulty equipment, missing equipment, and unsafe conditions will be taken care of right away. Fines will be issued to companies failing to comply. Media and other communications will be used to help increase awareness of safety problems and how to solve them. Employers are encourage to take advantage of the information and make the company a work safe site.
