At work: Anyone who job requires lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying objects by hand; loading and unloading trucks, carts, boxes or crates; picking binders from an overhead shelf; lifting patients from a bed; moving heavy parts or assemblies from one place to another; At home: carrying groceries to the kitchen or garbage cans to the curb; picking up sticks in the yard; mowing the lawn; picking up a child, moving furniture.
What are the consequences of poor Manual Material Handling techniques?
Sore muscles and more serious conditions related to low back pain (LBP). About half of all low back injuries are related to lifting, with another 10 percent are associated with pushing and pulling activities, and 6 percent more occur while holding, manipulating, throwing or carrying materials. In the US LBP accounts for about one-quarter of all lost workdays.
What are the risk factors for Manual Material Handling?
Personal: history of back injury, personal fitness level, recreational activities, hobbies, age, gender, body weight, physical stature, family, financial or other personal difficulties, job dissatisfaction, work-related stress among other factors. Environmental: Confined or limited workspaces that constrain an individual’s posture, headroom and reaching and lifting objects distant from the torso places undue strain on the back. Hard flooring and standing for long periods. Workplace: handling heavy loads, task repetition, twisting, bending, stretching and reaching, static postures, whole body vibration, prolonged sitting, direct trauma to the back, slips, trips and falls.
What responsibility does management have to reduce injuries from poor Manual Material Handling techniques?
These are covered under the General Duties of Employers to provide and maintain a safe working environment in all provincial and Federal Regulations. BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador and federally regulated workplaces all have specific sections of their Health & Safety Regulations devoted to manual material handling.

Can I leave the course open in the background while I do other work?
Yes, no problem.
What do I do if I run out of time? Do I have to complete in 1 session?
You can take the Manual Material Handling course in as many sessions, and as long as you like. The system will just time you out if there is no activity for a while, but you can just log in again and continue the course from where you left off.
What happens if I don't pass the final test?
You are allowed to repeat any or all sections of the course as many times as you need. You can take the final test up to 3 times to achieve the passing grade of 80%.
Once I have completed the course, do I get a certificate proving I have completed a Manual Material Handling training course?
Yes the administrator can print a training certificate once you pass the final test.
What happens if I fail, do I have to pay again?
Not at all. You are allowed to take the final test 3 times.
What if I lose my proof of training certificate or wallet card?
The training administrator can reprint the wallet card or Manual Material Handling certificate for you.
